Snoop Dogg's venture capital firm is leading an investment in a cannabis lab-testing company

Casa Verde Capital is leading a $1 million seed round into Cannalysis, a cannabis-lab testing company.
Cannalysis tests both medical and recreational cannabis for potency, chemical residue, industrial solvents, pesticides, and microbes in the California market, with plans to expand.
California is developing lab testing regulations for all cannabis sold within the state.

A venture capital firm that focuses on early-stage ancillary investments in the cannabis industry is funding a cannabis lab-testing company that is looking to take on the massive California market.

Casa Verde, which counts the rapper-turned-entertainer Snoop Dogg among its partners, led a $1 million round into Cannalysis, a "tech-forward," cannabis lab that tests medical and recreational cannabis products for potency, chemical residue, industrial solvents, pesticides, and unwanted microbes like E. coli or yeast.

Cannalysis also offers dispensaries an online portal and directly integrates with WeedMaps, an online dispensary locator.

"We are at an inflection point for this industry and we are ready to expand," Cannalysis CEO Brian Lannon said in a statement to Business Insider. "Having a marquee investor and strategic partner like Casa Verde, will be instrumental in helping us achieve our growth objectives."

Karan Wadherwara, the managing partner at Casa Verde, called Cannalysis "one of the leading lab platforms," in California.

"This approach has also positioned Cannalysis to quickly scale and establish JV partners around the country," Wadherwara said.

California's recreational cannabis market will open on January 1, 2018. The state's Bureau of Cannabis Control mandates that all medical cannabis be lab-tested for specific levels of pesticides and other chemicals, and is developing rules for the recreational side of the industry.

While the federal government still considers cannabis illegal, a new report from the Brightfield Group, a market research firm for the cannabis industry, predicts that the global cannabis market will hit $7.7 billion by 2017, and $31.4 billion by 2021

Tokyo Motor Show 2017 Features World’s First Dent-Proof Car

Along with some of the most awesome concept cars, Tokyo Motor Show also featured world’s very first dent proof car this year.

Flesby II ultra-compact vehicle has its body panels covered with soft rubber that acts as a shock absorber and can absorb normal collision impacts.

Toyoda Gosei came up with the idea for this shock-absorber dent-proof car in 2013. He was himself a manufacturer of plastic and rubber automotive parts.

“We put airbags, which are mainly employed inside the car, on its exteriors, such as its hood or fender, to protect the entire body,” said managing officer of Toyoda Gosei, Toyoda Gosei on Wednesday.

The car can also change its shape with the help of electrical power. It can also communicate with pedestrians and other vehicles using LED lights projected on the rubber.

“In the event of contact with a pedestrian, the soft body serves a safety function in absorbing the impact,” said the company.

The vehicle will be available in the market by 2030 as notified by the company.

Tech Some iPhone users can't type the letter 'i' — here's what's going on and how to fix it

A bug in Apple's iOS 11.1 doesn't let you type the letter "i." The "i" becomes this ...

The problem likely comes from the autocorrect software, or it could be linked to emojis. Some users get an "I" in the frequently used emoji section. Here's a temporary fix for the problem.

Go to Settings—General—Keyboard—Text Replacement—Tap the plus sign

In "phrase" type an uppercase "I." In "short-cut" type a lowercase "i." This overrides the autocorrect so that every time you type a lowercase "i" it will change to an uppercase "I."

For the most part, this will solve the problem. Apple plans to fix the problem in a future software update.

Tech A $20 billion startup that rents office space to millennials is opening a grade school inside its offices

WeWork, a $20 billion startup that leases trendy millennial-friendly office spaces around the world, is getting into the business of childhood education.
A spinoff called "WeGrow" will open its first school in New York City in fall 2018. The startup hopes to expand from one school to many globally.
Students in the WeGrow pilot program learn business from entrepreneurs who rent office space from WeWork, and spend one day a week at a farm.
Coworking startup WeWork wants to change the way people live, work, and get fit. Now the $20 billion company is tackling education with the launch of a grade school.

According to Bloomberg, WeWork will open a private elementary school called "WeGrow" inside a New York City WeWork office next fall. The goal is to mold the next generation of entrepreneurs.

"In my book, there's no reason why children in elementary schools can't be launching their own businesses," Rebekah Neumann, chief brand officer of WeWork, told Bloomberg.

WeGrow already has a pilot program with seven students underway at the startup's Manhattan headquarters.

Children ages five to eight spend one day a week at a 60-acre farm north of the city, where they learn business and bits of math and science by running their own farm stand. The other four days of the week, students engage in more traditional instruction.

On occasion, WeWork employees and entrepreneurs who rent office space from the company offer lessons. Adam Neumann, cofounder and CEO of WeWork (and Rebekah Neumann's husband), led a workshop on supply and demand. Students can also secure mentorships with WeWork customers.

In the future, there will also be classes around mindfulness

The Neumanns join a growing list of tech entrepreneurs trying to disrupt the classroom. Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan run a private company that funnels the couple's Facebook stock into programs that improve schools. They also own a school in Palo Alto. Tech investors spent a combined $2.35 billion on education-technology startups in 2016.

There have been some missteps in Silicon Valley's attempts to revolutionize education. Last week, AltSchool, an educational software developer and network of "micro-schools" with locations in California and New York, announced it is shuttering at least two schools at the end of the academic year. Bloomberg reported that its losses are "piling up."

With WeGrow, WeWork envisions a network of micro-schools inside the company's office rentals. The first school will be located inside the startup's headquarters in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood; when WeWork moves into its new headquarters at the flagship Lord & Taylor location on Fifth Avenue in 2018, the WeGrow school will relocate with it.

Rebekah Neumann plans to enroll about 65 students next fall.

Danish architect Bjarke Ingels' firm BIG has been tapped to design the first school. According to Fast Company, the design will break down traditional classroom environments into "more tactile and visually stimulating" work stations.

Tuition at WeGrow has not been publicly announced.

The startup has raised at least $8 billion to date, with $4.4 billion flowing in since July. At a whopping $20 billion valuation, WeWork is the sixth most valuable startup in the world.

Tech Apple could be on the hook for €1 billion in interest on its Irish tax bill (AAPL)

Ireland will collect billions of euros from Apple in the next year as a "state-aid" penalty.
That penalty will include about €1 billion in interest, Apple revealed in a SEC filing
In addition to paying Ireland some €13 billion in back taxes, Apple will also have to fork over another €1 billion in interest as part of its penalty for violating Europe's "state-aid" rules, the iPhone maker has disclosed in a regulatory document.

Ireland is still 'computing' the tax bill the EU wants it to collect from the iPhone maker, Apple said in its annual report, which it filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday. Apple's previous estimates of the amount it would have to pay Ireland did not include any estimate for interest. The new tallies amount to about $15 billion for the recovery amount and $1.16 billion in interest.

"Although Ireland is still computing the recovery amount, the company expects the amount to be in line with the European Commission’s announced recovery amount of €13 billion, plus interest of €1 billion," Apple said in the annual report.

When Ireland does finalize the amount of taxes it needs to collect from Apple, the iPhone company plans to pay the amount out of its massive stores of foreign cash and place the balance in escrow. That is expected to happen in 2018, according to Apple's report.

Last year, the European Commission found Apple to be in violation of European "state-aid" rules. Essentially, it ruled that Apple had received special treatment — unfair deals from Ireland — that allowed it to pay an effective corporate tax rate of just 1%.

Ireland hasn't exactly been eager to collect Apple's taxes, and the Irish government has looked for money managers to invest the tax money while it's in escrow, Bloomberg reported.

It hasn't been clear until now how much interest Apple would have to pay on the outstanding taxes. Some estimates of have ranged as high as €6 billion. However, Luca Maestri, Apple's chief financial officer, told Irish journalists in 2016 that he believed the interest "is going to be a significantly lower number."

Appeals over the case are still ongoing and could take as long as five years. If Apple wins, Ireland may have to return the entire penalty.

In US Apple's $120 mn patent award from Samsung upheld by top US court

The US Supreme Court on Monday upheld a $120 million patent award Samsung was ordered to pay Apple in the latest ruling in a series of legal skirmishes between the top two smartphone makers.
The US justices let stand without comment a 2016 appeals court verdict reinstating the award for Apple, which sued Samsung over patents for "slide to unlock" and other features used on smartphones.

The case is separate from a bigger patent court battle in which Samsung was initially ordered to pay $1 billion to the iPhone maker. That case is set for a new trial over some elements of the damages awarded.

Monday's ruling involved some smartphone features Apple alleged were copied by the South Korean electronics giant. Samsung had claimed these features were "obvious" and thus not able to be patented.

Apple had sought some $2.2 billion at trial, only to have a jury award the California-based company $119.6 million. An appeals panel overturned that verdict, but the full appellate panel reinstated the award in October 2016 by a vote of 8-3.

Samsung and Apple agreed in 2014 to drop all patent disputes outside the United States, marking a partial ceasefire in a seemingly relentless legal war between the world's two tech giants.

The companies have battled in close to a dozen countries, with each accusing the other of infringing on various patents related to their flagship smartphone and tablet products.

'We need to do more' about misinformation, Google says

A top Google executive has said the US internet giant has to do more to crack down on illegal content and misinformation, after American firms were grilled in Congress over Russian meddling in the 2016 US election.
"We've made some progress and we obviously need to do more," Matt Brittin, president of Google's Europe, Middle East and Africa division, told reporters at Google's European headquarters in Dublin on Thursday.

A day after bombshell indictments in a US probe of Moscow's election interference and possible coordination between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia, Facebook, Google and Twitter told concerned lawmakers Tuesday they were taking necessary steps to rid their platforms of disinformation, propaganda and provocation.

In their testimony, the social media companies revealed startling new data showing many more millions of Americans were exposed to the fake news than previously thought.

In another hearing on Wednesday, Facebook said the apparent political meddling included use of its image-oriented messaging service Instagram, and that those suspect accounts were seen by some 20 million Americans last year.

The latest data on Instagram was on top of the estimated 126 million Americans exposed to Facebook posts from Russian entities seeking to create divisions during the election campaign.

In Thursday's interview, Brittin revealed that "there had been a very limited use" of their advertising by Russian interests during the election, highlighting two accounts which spent "about $4,700 on advertising" that was not targeted on demographics or geography.

"But any misrepresentation is bad, and we have continued to look at how we can improve our policies and transparency," he said.

Committed to Europe
But misinformation is not the only battle Google is facing.

In March, The Times newspaper revealed that ads for companies and other organisations were being promoted alongside extremist content, including videos posted by American white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan member David Duke as well as by Wagdi Ghoneim, an Islamist preacher banned from the UK for inciting hatred.

The scandal exposed the weaknesses of a system of automated sale of advertising space based on algorithms, and shook advertiser confidence. It led to a slew of companies pulling ads from Google's internet platforms.

"The advertisers pullback has been limited but relatively serious," Brittin said, but there was "no big impact on our numbers".

The group has in any case passed a battery of measures to reassure advertisers -- which can now more precisely determine the type of content on which they want their ads to appear.

Google has also invested in ways to better detect suspicious content, including with artificial intelligence and machine learning tools, hiring significant numbers of people, and putting in place faster procedures in case of emergency.

Brittin also said Google was committed to developing its European operations, which count about 14,000 employees.

"We want to continue to invest in Europe," he said, even as the European Union wages a major crackdown on member states bending rules to give big international firms unfair tax breaks, with Apple and Google in the firing line.

In June, the EU slapped Google with a record fine of 2.4 billion euros ($2.8 billion) for illegally favouring its shopping service in search results, accusing the company of booking huge profits while denying state-coffers much-needed money.

"Taxes are due where we make our profits and that's in the US," Brittin said.

Netflix is parting ways with Kevin Spacey, the star and executive producer of "House of Cards."

"Netflix will not be involved with any further production of House of Cards that includes Kevin Spacey," Netflix said in a statement Friday night. "We will continue to work with MRC during this hiatus time to evaluate our path forward as it relates to the show."

"We have also decided we will not be moving forward with the release of the film Gore, which was in post-production, starring and produced by Kevin Spacey."

"Gore" is a biopic of writer Gore Vidal staring Spacey that had had recently wrapped shooting.

Media Rights Capital, the production company behind "House of Cards," confirmed that Spacey is off the show.

"While we continue the ongoing investigation into the serious allegations concerning Kevin Spacey's behavior on the set of House of Cards, he has been suspended, effective immediately," MRC said in a statement. "MRC, in partnership with Netflix, will continue to evaluate a creative path forward for the program during the hiatus."

Spacey has been accused by several men — including many who were underage at the time — of sexual harassment and assault. Eight people who worked on "House of Cards" have reportedly accused Spacey of sexual harassment or assault.

Representatives for the actor recently said that Spacey will "seek evaluation and treatment" following the series of sexual misconduct allegations against him. Spacey's agency and publicist have reportedly dropped the actor.

Spacey's apology to actor Adam Rapp, who said Spacey made a sexual advance on him at age 14, sparked criticism when he chose to come out as gay in the same statement.

Netflix had previously halted production on "House of Cards" and announced that the upcoming season, its sixth, would be its last.

Producers were also reportedly talking about killing off Spacey's character, Frank Underwood.

King hacker Teenage boy convicted for over 50, 000 computer hacks in Finland

Reports reveal that a Finnish 17-year-old previously linked to the Lizard Squad hacker group has been convicted of over 50,000 "aggravated computer break-ins."

According to the BBC, Julius "Zeekill" Kivimaki — who bills himself as an "untouchable hacker god," on what appears to be his Twitter page — will face a light sentence, despite an extensive roster of hacks (50,700, to be precise) he's said to have been a part of.

Sources say Judge Wilhelm Normann of the District Court of Espoo gave Kivimaki a suspended sentence of two years in prison. As part of the sentence, he was ordered to turn over about $7,300 in property acquired through illegal means and speak out against cybercrime and is having his online activities monitored.

According to multiple sources, Kivimaki, who spent just a month in jail before the trial began, was convicted for exploiting vulnerabilities in Adobe software to gain access to over 50,000 servers. He used stolen credit card information to make 21 purchases (among them, champagne) and took 7GB of email data from MIT, after routing it through a Harvard University server.

He also engaged in "swatting," the practice of calling in a fake emergency to draw a SWAT team to someone's home as a prank, according to Daily Dot.

Judge Norrman said he took Kivimaki's age into account, who had been age 15 and 16 when he committed the break-ins.

Furthermore, reports say Kivimaki is said to be part of Lizard Squad, the group behind last Christmas' Playstation and Xbox network attacks. Those hacks knocked out the ability to play against others online just as people were unwrapping their new gaming consoles. However, Kivimaki wasn't charged for those hacks.

According to sources, a federal judge has thrown out a $532.9 million award against Apple Inc and ordered a new trial on damages, in a case where a jury found that the iPhone maker's iTunes software infringed three patents owned by a Texas company.

Various reports state that in a decision on Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap in Tyler, Texas, said jurors who on February 24 awarded the damages to Smartflash LLC because of Apple's willful infringement might have been confused by his instructions on how to properly calculate royalties.

Apple argued that the damages were too high because jurors might have improperly considered the entire market value of the products, rather than distinguishing between patented and unpatented features.

Gilstrap stated his jury instructions were legally correct but not applicable to the facts of the case, and "may have created a skewed damages horizon for the jury."

He set a new trial date only on the issue of damages for September 14 in Tyler, where Smartflash is based.

Bradley Caldwell, a lawyer for Smartflash, didn't immediately respond on Wednesday to requests for comment.

Smartflash accused Apple in a May 2013 lawsuit of infringing patents for accessing and storing songs, videos and games, enabling the California-based company to sell more of its iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch products.

The lawsuit said Patrick Racz, a co-inventor of Smartflash's patents, had discussed some of his ideas in 2000 with officials of a European company, which included Augustin Farrugia, who later became a senior director at Apple.

In the lawsuit, Smartflash originally sought damages of $852 million.

The trial took place in the federal court for the Eastern District of Texas, one of the favorite destinations for lawyers representing patent holders because of its reputation for high damages awards.
